High water level in Helge å: Municipality is pumping water to prevent flooding

The water level in Helge å (Helge River) is high and it’s expected to rise further. On Monday, the municipality has been pumping out rainwater from wells to avoid flooding in central Kristianstad.

– When the water level is too high in the river, the check-valve cannot open. We have therefore put pumps in all the wells that collect rainwater from the city and have drains in Helge å, explains Johan Isberg, Supervisor at the Technical Administration.

– Otherwise there could be flooding in cellars and towards the city. It’s simply a safety measure, says Johan Isberg.

On Monday morning, the water level was 1.49 metres above sea level. The forecasts show that it will continue to rise to 1.6 to 1.7 metres.

Karl-Erik Svensson, responsible for the embankment at the municipality, has previously said that the embankments will protect levels of 2.5 to 3 metres above sea level without difficulty.
