Kristianstad was given the go-ahead to make an exception of the whole municipality from the law on private accomodation, ebo-law.This means that a new rule applies as from 1st July: new arrivals who have been placed in another municipality but who choose to move to Kristianstad will lose their daily allowance.

The government has ruled that new arrivals cannot choose to live in vulnerable areas. But the government does not want whole municipalities, including better-off areas, to be excepted from the ebo-law.

”It's a step in the wrong direction for Kristianstad”

– The idea behind the limitation has always been that it should cover areas which are socially and economiclly challenged. Now we are suggesting changes. These will prevent a municipality from naming an area in defiance of the aims of the regulations, says Morgan Johansson (S), minister of justice, also responsible for migration, in an announcement to the press.

Municipal commissioner Pierre Månsson (L) is critical. He points out that the fact that the municipality receives refugees affects the economy in the whole municipality.

– If the government goes ahead with this change now, it's a step in the wrong direction for Kristianstad.

Politicians will have further discussions on what is to be done.
