Accidents involving wildlife increasing in Sweden – this is the road with the most accidents in Kristianstad
There were 647 accidents with wildlife in Kristianstad municipality in 2018. Calle Eriksson is a Tracking Hunter for wounded animals within the National Wildlife Accident Council (Nationella Viltolycksrådet).
– I advise all drivers to be very observant of wildlife, especially when driving in dusk lighting. But the best thing to do would be for everyone to reduce their speed.
He warns about one road in particular.
– On väg 19 (Route 19), you have to be really careful. There is not enough wildlife fencing. At the same time, the maximum speed is 90 kilometres per hour.
The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) is going to set up more wildlife fencing along the entire length of Route 19.
In 2018, 47,000 metres of wildlife fencing was put up along väg 21 (Route 21). A fauna crossing is being built across Route 21 outside of Vinslöv so that wildlife can cross the road.
