The first Vasaloppet was made by Gustav Eriksson in 1521. He was trying to flee from the Danish king, but stopped in Mora and returned to Sälen, where he led the revolt against the Danes.

Gustav Eriksson became Sweden's first king, under the name of Gustav Vasa.

See the film ”Gustav Vasa's adventures in Dalarna” in SVT's Open Archive. It was shown for the first time in 1971.
