Sweden's national day is celebrated on 6th June
Earlier 6th June was observed only as Swedish Flag day. In 1983 the day was elevated to become the national day. The national day is celebrated to commemorate that Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden on 6th June 1523.
On that day Sweden once more became a free kingdom and left the Kalmar Union. The day also commemorates the fact that the form of government decided in 1809 was signed on 6th June.
The Swedish royal family usually celebrates the national day at Skansen, Stockholm.
