Sudanese in protest against military coup
Shortly after lunch people chanting slogans met up at Stora Torg where the Sudanese Society had called a meeting. About twenty people from different sections in Skåne had come along.
In the Sudan the situation is serious after the army seized power and forced prime minister Abdalla Hamdok and his government to resign. It is a big setback for the hopes of democracy which had grown after dictator Omar al-Bashir was removed from power in 2018.
– We are making ourselves heard to the Swedish government so that they will support the movement for democracy in the Sudan and refuse to co-operate in any way with the military regime, says the chairman of the local society Rida Himoura when the newspaper asks about the purpose of the demonstration.
On the square two TV-screens had been set up to be able to follow similar demonstrations elsewhere in the world. Accordíng to Rida Himoura 72 demonstrations were arranged on the same Saturday, 16 of which were in towns in the Sudan.
