New cases of Covid-19 discovered in schools

Several new cases of Covid-19 have been found in schools, both among pupils and staff. Now clearer instructions have come from Smittskydd Skåne (Disease Control Skåne) about who should be informed at a school in case of infection.

Since the second week of September, eight new cases of Covid-19 have been found among employees within schools. Among pupils, there are a total of three confirmed cases since the start of term.

Is the increase due to the fact that school has started?

– I don’t know if you can draw that conclusion. We have 18,000 children and 4,000 employees in our business. We don’t have a cluster infection. I believe we have a stable development so far, says Kenth Olsson, Head of the Children and Education Administration.

– We should also bear in mind that testing has increased among people. Therefore, the number of cases will surely increase within schools in the future.

”We have an obligation to inform where we believe people may have come into contact with the infected person”
Ulrika Capion, at the Children and Education Administration.

The school is not obliged to trace the infection; rather, it’s Smittskydd Skåne who decides.

– The school does not carry out infection tracking, but we have an obligation to inform where we believe people may have come into contact with the infected person, says Ulrika Capion, Communications Manager at the Children and Education Administration.

One of the latest recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) is to test children of school age if they show symptoms. But it’s up to the guardian; the school cannot demand that children be tested.

Facts

A child of school-age who has symptoms

A child of school-age who has symptoms should be tested for Covid-19. If a test hasn’t been taken, it’s recommended that children and young people stay at home for as long as they have symptoms, plus two days without symptoms.

If the child has mild symptoms, such as a dry cough and a mild runny nose, when seven days have passed since becoming sick, the child can then return to school (even if no test has been taken).

If a pupil has Covid-19, the recommendation from Smittskydd Skåne is that other pupils/guardians who are in the same class should be informed. This also applies to teachers who have taught the pupil.
