Hassan Sharif – a playful pioneer in Middle Eastern art

With the exhibition ”Hassan Sharif: I am The Single Work Artsit” Malmö Art Gallery shows a unique artistic career from a part of the world that is seldom represented in Sweden.

Until his death in 2016 Hassan Sharif was a pioneer in experimental contemporary art in the Middle East. He created his works from inexpensive everyday materials as a protest against art as something for the elite.

The exhibition is the first big retrospective exhibition of Sharif’s works in Europe and his first one-man exhibition in Sweden, with over 120 works.

– The purpose of the exhibition is to draw attention to Malmö as an international town that includes, inspires and reflects everyone who lives in there, not just the white middle class who are usually the most represented in art circles, says Heidi Hakala, communicator at Malmö Art Gallery.

Footnote: Guided tours in Arabic at 3 pm on 18th October, 11th November and 12th December. Free tickets can be obtained at the Art Gallery bookshop the same day.
