Daniel has become friends with the welding flame

Daniel Bertilsson, 25, didn’t exert himself in school, he says. Last year he had had enough of being out of work and hard up. He got good help from Göingeung, and now he will soon have completed his training as a welder.

Not all young participants in Göinge ung make use of the help.

– In my group there were six or seven of us. Some just went there because they had to. I went to find out more about different possibilities and get some advice. Right from the start we were told that Scan needed summer workers, he says.

He has has good help from all the discussions and information at Göinge ung.

”I didn’t exert myself at school, I didn’t much like it. We moved around a lot”

– About what the unemployment benefit office can do, insurance at the workplace and what rights you have, how trades unions work. That a boss can’t treat you just anyhow.

Daniel grew up in Åhus, but the family has moved around a lot.

– I didn’t exert myself at school, I didn’t much like it. We moved around a lot, Everything went to the dogs. I didn’t finish the last year in class nine.

Daniel always wears protective clothing. ”But I still burn myself now and again”, he says.

Why did you get a grip on your studies again?

– If you’re out of work you’ve got plenty of time – but no money. I have a driving licence and a truck-driver’s certificate, but I still can’t find a job.

For the past six yeas he has lived with his mother in Sibbhult. He has received financial aid.

– I was very doubtful about going to Göinge ung. But I agreed to give it a go.

He was pleasantly surprised by all the help he was given. A careers counsellor helped him, he studied maths and English at Göinge adult education centre, and then he could go on to choose what he wanted to do. His choice soon fell on training as a welder.

Why?

– It’s useful to know how to do it, and it can be interesting. You can work on your car, make a shelf, anything at all. I want to be able to get out too, not just sit still on a chair and work, he says.

With help from Arbetsförmedlingen (Swedish Public Employment Service) he got in touch with Montico in Olofström, which trains welders. He attended the course for a month – then corona struck.

”I’ve chosen to be a Tig-welder, to weld pipes, which is the most difficult. Then you can find jobs abroad – and get well-paid”, says Daniel.

– You have to make the best of the situation. Now I can only be there one day a week. We learn and try out different kinds of welding techniques. I have to learn the theoretical bits by myself, using my computer or my smartphone.

Because of the corona pandemic it is uncertain when the course will end.

– Time will tell. Welding gives you a steady job. It ’s hard, but it seems interesting, and welders are always in demand.
