Crayfish by the light of the moon

When the moon is shining red in August it’s time for a crayfish party – that is, a party with lots of crayfish on the table. A snaps or two and traditional songs are all part of the fun.

In August you are allowed to fish for crayfish, but you must have permission. Nowadays we eat crayfish all the year round, although a lot of people stick to the traditional time of August.

There are 618 different species of crayfish in the world. People have been eating crayfish for a long time. There are written recipes from Europe showing that crayfish were caught and eaten in the Middle Ages.

A crayfish party – ”kräftskiva” – is a traditional Swedish event in August. There are similar parties in Norway and Finland too.

The word ”kräftskiva” first appeared in Sweden in Dagens Nyheter in 1931. ”Skiva” refers to the table or board laden with food and drink. And this year you must keep at a distance of ten crayfish from your neighbours, to avoid corona infection .
