Cleared: Wolf outside Osby may be shot

The wolf that attacked sheep in Visseltofta-Osby may be shot. The decision was made by Länsstyrelsen Skåne (the County Administrative Board of Skåne). But the hunt for protection may only last until September 18th in an area around Osby.

It’s unusual for Länsstyrelsen Skåne to make decisions on hunting for protection.

– We’ve made the decision because it concerns an individual who has attacked domestic animals several times and we believe that there is a risk of new attacks, says David Börjesson, Wildlife Management Officer at Länsstyrelsen Skåne, in a press release.

Hunting for protection may only take place in an area around Osby.

– To reduce the risk of the wrong individual being shot.

The Viltskadecenter (Wildlife Damage Centre) at Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) has performed a DNA analysis of the wolf. It shows that the wolf is a young female wolf that comes from the Tönsen territory in Gävleborg.

The wolf has attacked sheep in several places. In May it attacked sheep in Örebro County, in June in Västra Götaland County and in July it attacked sheep in Jönköping County.

There are about 320 wolves in Sweden.
