Advent – and a longing for Christmas

Advent soon here. This year it feels as though we need more light and warmth than usual.

On 29th November we can light our first Advent candle. And we hang up a Christmas star in the window too. The star symbolises the star of Bethlehem which showed the three wise men the way to the baby Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem.

Nowadays the star is used to spread the spirit of Christmas. And we feel a longing for Christmas. In the Bible it says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and this is what we celebrate on Christmas Eve. In years gone by everybody fasted for four weeks before Christmas. In the 11th century the Christmas fast was given the name of Advent, which means ”the coming”.
