They are fighting the war against corona

In just a few hours patients go from a normal situation to one that is life-threatening.
The medical services are battling against an infection nobody knows how long will continue - against a virus with no cure.

Kristianstadsbladet has been to CSK’s intensive care unit for corona patients. Those most severely affected by covid-19 come to this special intensive care unit.

Nine patients can be cared for here at the same time – at most there have been five.

We meet chief physician Gustav Apelqvist, nurse Lisa Arvidsson and assisant nurse Carina Johansen.

”It’s a strange feeling informing relatives by phone about things we’d never thought about having to say on the phone before,” says Gustav Apelqvist.

– I’ve never seen people who ar so terribly ill, says Gustav Apelqvist .

The patients must often remain in hospital for a long time.

– They spend more time in a respirator, the respirator care is more demanding than usual, and there ae more complications with other infections.

The three agree that the longest time anyone has lain here is 35 days.

The course of the illness is treacherous. In spite of a low oxygen content in the blood, a patient can be wide awake and give a lively impression. Normally people who are admitted to the intensive care unit are tired and worn out.

– It isn’t diffiicult to talk to covid patients the first time you see them. But then it just says swish, says Gustav Apelqvist.

– They can become very ill in a matter of hours, says Lisa Arvidsson.

There is no vaccine against covid-19. No cure. All that doctors and nurses can do is to support the body’s own functions and hope that the patient can conquer the virus. So far the pandemic has claimed more than 4,000 lives in Sweden.
