– My brain is reeling with all I have to learn, says Maria Götz.

She has been on the course for two weeks. There is a lot of theory, including learning all about electrical systems.

Aleksandra Pawlikowska, a 19-year-old girl from Malmö, also thinks the training is difficult.

Maria Götz tries to pep her up.

– You have a young, healthy brain. Spare a thought for us oldies!

– Yes, our grey cells haven’t been used for years, says Sofie Swame.

The four women find the training at Yrkeshögskolan challenging, but they are enthusiastic.

Maria Götz was curious about the course for train technicians.

– I’m not afraid of trying new things. So here I am, she says.

Fanny Nyberg read about the training in Kristianstadsbladet, and that was that. Sofie Swame has worked for many years in the care sector and wanted to try something new.

Aleksandra Pawlikowski says:

– I’ve always wanted to work with trains.

Last year only one woman started the course. Now five of the 20 students in the class are women.

Did you have thoughts about starting a course that has mostly men on it?

– No, not at all. I’ve worked for 15 years in a branch that has mostly men. It suits me very well, says Maria Götz.

Per Malmberg is leader of the course. He promises good career opportunities for those who complete the course.

Per Malmberg is leader of the course. He says the employment market looks very good for a train technician. Thee are lots of career opportunities, and the pay is good.

– Nowadays it’s a job with clean floors and a datorised workplace. It’s great that more women have started training for the job, he says.

Aleksandra Pawlikowska says:

– There’s a lot of talk about gender at the moment. Employers recognise the need to take on more women. And how can they do that? That’s easy – by giving them a better salary. It’s the right time to be a woman.
