CSK–an alert 45-year-old that saves lives
The Central hospital was opened in 1973. CSK is one of Region Skåne’s four accident and emergency hospitals, with 255 beds.
– The most important thing for CSK is that we are a complete A&E hospital, as well as being able to offer neurosurgery and thorax (heart/lung) surgery , says hospital director Johan Cosmo.
He has an unassuming office on the 13th floor. He is new – since last September – in his role as hospital director. But he has been director of CSK before, in 2013.
Cosmo is responsible for 2 000 staff in eleven sectors. But many more work at the hospital, for example psychiatrists, orthopedists, cleaners and so on.
Among serious accidents, the most common are accidents at the workplace and traffic accidents. In 2018 there was an increase in the number of drowning-related incidents.
48 000 patients come to A&E every year.
– And we have a very big out-patient department too, with 200 000 appointments to see a doctor and 90 000 to see a nurse every year.
The A&E department and the surgical unit are in need of renovation, at a cost of around 50 million crowns each. The big challenge is to get recently recruited staff in for example emergency care to stay on. Many younger colleagues leave.
– We must see what can be done. Perhaps a longer introducton period, we must adapt what we do as employers and see if we can find more opportunities for career advancement.
How is CSK different from other hospitals?
– There is a lot of talk about a CSK spirit. There is a sense of pride among the people who work here, and, I hope, among the local population as well. We say hello to one another, we recognise each other.
– We have a high rating among AT-doctors. They say the clinical experience they get here is very good.
